We just returned from the ISPO sports conference in Munich, Germany and we're so stoked to have done hundreds of demo rides with attendees from all over the world.   The LEIF became known around the event as 'the smile machine' because everyone was so stoked to shred and slide for the first time off the snow. Some of the attendees were even pulling off powered manuals and 360 spins on their first few rides! Demo Ride Now in Paris, France This event was also a great opportunity to spend more time with the team at VOLT - our European distributor. Volt is now offering LEIF demo...

Our mission is to snowboard everywhere - and this means all pavement, especially the uneven, dirty and with puddles the size of Lake Mead like we have here in Brooklyn. Therefore, we built the LEIF to be ready for anything. When designing the LEIF, we realized that we have a huge advantage when compared to electric skateboards. On an electric skateboard, you need the entire surface of the deck to move around and place your feet. The LEIF has snowboarding mechanics, which leaves a large space in the center of the board that won't be used. Moving the electronics to the top of the deck...

Building the LEIF eSnowboard required re-inventing the wheel by adding a motor to a free-spinning caster wheel. This system we call the SR360 is combined with customized longboard trucks to provide snowboard mechanics on pavement. This system is adjustable for a variety of setups and riding styles - from a learning setup, to a longboard that slides, to a full snowboarding experience. Here's a guide to how the SR360 system works and how to adjust different components to fit your unique riding style: The LEIF rocker is the most important area of that really defines the type of ride you'll get. Experimenting...

Early backer Barrett came by the LEIF HQ test track to show off his skills and give advice to other riders that are just getting started! Barrett's skills after just a few rides are impressive. Barrett came in with snowboarding experience, but he isn't a regular skateboarder. He attributes his ability to shred so quickly to watching the LEIF training videos in detail and replicating the moves on the videos. See more riding videos at www.LEIFTech.com/video...

LEIF customers are pioneering city snowboarding in 31 countries across the world, and some have documented their learning process. Here's a video from Cedric in France - he documented the first 90 minutes on his LEIF eSnowboard: Here are a few takeaways from his learning process: The first 20 minutes always feel awkward We see this process every demo day we've hosted in Brooklyn. The SR360 wheels feel crazy at first, and riders feel like a baby giraffe feeling out their legs for the first time. Watching Ced here at the 20 minute mark vs the 60 minute mark is a night and day...

This is a quick video mashup from early customers riding the LEIF for the first time in Bellevue, WA and Lake Geneva, Switzerland - enjoy! More boards going out this weekend as the production drive wheels are set to ship this Thursday June 23rd. We should also be getting our CE certification on Thursday, which will open up the shipping lanes to our customers in the EU. More news soon!...

Production is in full swing here in Brooklyn at the LEIFTech HQ. Even though we are still waiting on the main stock of drive wheels, we got a stack of 25 sets to ship and they are awesome, but pink!  Now, we didn't intend these wheels to be pink. The hardness, bounce and other physical properties are the same as our production wheels will be - but on sample runs it turns out that we have to take whatever color they are running for other customers at the time. Although, we have had a ton of great reviews and even customers that...

New Close Ups of Never Summer + LEIF Tech Here are some close up shots of our Never Summer decks and the brand new LEIF eSnowboard!   Google Hangout Rider Tips We want everyone to learn quickly and have a ton of fun riding the LEIF eSnowboard. Therefore, we are going to have a periodic rider support video chat on Google Hangouts. Here you will have the opportunity to speak directly with a LEIF team rider to get advice and riding tips. We will start with one per week and host more if more people are interested!...

The LEIF is the most extreme electric rideable on the market - and we know that our customers are going to be pushing the board to it's limits. Downtime is excruciating with such a fun board, so we put customer convenience over everything else and made the LEIF super easy to maintain. Unlike all other electric rideables, any component on the LEIF can be fixed or replaced with an allen key set, a screwdriver and a wrench. Every wire and electrical component has a plug connector, rather than a soldered joint. Nothing is glued or otherwise locked down. Easy Electronic Component Swaps We also did...

The dream of riding city streets like a snowboard is blasting off into the world in one week! Our early supporters will lead the pack and be the first to shred their city streets and introduce the world to eSnowboarding technology in more than 30 countries on 6 continents. Battle-Proven Design Shipping Next Monday We have spent the last 8 months rigorously testing our design and electronics across a variety of environments: Winter Cold (-15) degrees F Slushy streets Rainy days Summer heat We have tested the strength of the electronics and mechanics to shocks, having landed: Air 360s Jumping off curbs & stairs Fast and slow sliding Powering through...

We’ve been keeping our manufacturing updates to our customers only for the last few months, so we thought it is about time for a public update as well!   Shipping Starting in May   After upgrading our center wheels to aluminum cores and replacing sub-par suppliers, we are finally in the clear on a shipping time frame. The last few months have been hectic as we have been going through quality control on the final components, and had to replace two suppliers. But we fought through it and have come out the other side with solid components!   It is our goal internally to ship most of the...

Throughout beta testing we have discovered a few things that have helped us to make a better board. One of our discoveries was that tall people with really narrow stances or short people with really wide stances have chosen deck sizes that might not be the best fit for them. Therefore, we have added a range of stance width options rather than just one stance width for each deck by adding multiple binding mount locations - just like you would find on a snowboard. This feature will be available for all pre-order LEIF eSnowboards. This will add a ton of versatility and customization because...

Hi Everyone, So there has been a ton of news covering the latest fires happening with self balancing scooters (or "hoverboards", a name which we loathe because they neither hover or are a board) causing many airlines to ban these scooters from their planes. The big question for us is - will we be able to travel with the LEIF? I was fortunate enough to test the ability to fly with the LEIF late last week. It was during my trip that Delta Airlines announced that they would no longer allow "hoverboards" on their planes. I knew that our batteries are under...

Hi Everyone,   It has been an exciting week here we have been populating and testing PCBs. This week, we got to work with and test the Beta remote control PCBs.   Remote Control PCB Testing   This week, we began testing the Beta remote control PCB hardware and software - and so far everything is working perfectly. The remote control is designed with one single button for operation, and one reset button that will be accessed by using a pin or paper clip if necessary. There are three LEDs that will indicate remote control battery level, bluetooth pairing and an on/off indicator. The firmware is also completely...

The board is running great and we have sent the specs for four Beta PCBs last Friday. All other mechanical and electrical components have been tested and approved, and most of the mechanical parts are already in the warehouse waiting for assembly. Beta Boards [caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500"] Gathering components for the beta boards this afternoon[/caption] The plan at this point is to get our beta PCBs and ride them as much as possible in November. We will be sending one to a testing lab that will freeze, drop, shake, spray with water and do all kinds of other testing on the board so that...

Our final motor controller PCBs arrived last Friday and we've been hard at work populating and testing these boards for final production. Phase 1: Get all electrical components working (4-5 days) Right now, components like mosfet transistors and capacitors are being added and tested one-by-one in a meticulous fashion to ensure quality and longevity of the board. If all components were added to the board, and something fried, then we would have no idea where the issue is happening - therefore, we are testing one-by-one. After the electrical components are working, then we will move onto desktop testing. Phase 2: Control desktop flywheels...

We just received our first shipment of motors (220 units so far!) and the quality, precision and appearance of the production motors is beyond our expectations. Originally invented in 1888 by Nikola Tesla, the 3-phase A/C motor is capable of generating a ton of power while taking up the fraction of the space that a traditional DC motor would require. The LEIFTech 3-phase A/C motors are small enough to fit unnoticed under the deck while providing enough power (1,295 watts!) to climb hills and travel up to 8 miles per charge. Here's a nice group shot of the motors in our Brooklyn HQ: Close up...

The LEIF eSnowboard decks by Never Summer Industries are finally here, and we couldn't be more impressed! The Carbonium finish turned out spectacular and now our design team will move to assembling the parts and adding final touch graphics. Notice the fine detail of the flat snowboard-like edges and the corners - no detail was overlooked. Here are a few shots that we took in the office this afternoon. More updates prototype photos to come!   Don't miss out on this huge discount for our pre-order customers that are slated to receive their eSnowboards this summer. The first full priced batch won't ship until the...

Hi Everyone, We are back with a few exciting updates to the progress of wrapping up the final details of the LEIF eSnowboard. It has been a hectic start to the summer with some speed bumps and challenges that have since been overcome. PCB Development Progress After an initial setback on the PCB development, our EE team has finally programmed the motor controllers to control each motor independently - which is critical to the traction control algorithms. The motor control module from Texas Instruments only ships with software libraries for one motor control. Their official position is that the two-motor control is being...

Hey everyone! Just sending out a quick update and sneak peek photo of our test PCB boards that I shot on Monday. This circuit board pictured above is helping us dial in the communications, speed control and traction control. You can see the bottom part of the circuit board where the mini USB charging port will go, as well as connections for LEDs (which will tell you the power status of the remote control battery) and the bluetooth module. It has been so much fun to see the dream coming together this year. We also got to get a glimpse of the first motor controllers...

Here are a few shots from the workshop today: Stay tuned for more photos and component updates to come! ...

Here's a quick update on the production progress & shipping estimates: Our Electronic Engineering team is wrapping up the PCB design that will allow for the traction control, regenerative braking, battery management, bluetooth communication and more. These PCBs are on track to wrap up development and testing by the last week of May, with a target deadline of submitting our final order to the PCB manufacturer on May 30th. The PCB manufacturing process is expected to take between 4-6 weeks from order to delivery to our shop in Brooklyn, so we could receive these PCBs and get the first boards out by the end of June. However, we...

An eSnowboard Deck: Built by Snowboarding Pros I saved this announcement for last because Never Summer has been a snowboarding brand that I grew up respecting and following. Their decks were always among the most innovative and the highest quality around - they are still the only snowboard deck you can buy with a 3-year warranty! Never Summer is also made in the USA, and fabricates everything in Denver, Colorado. When thinking about the right partner to build the decks for the LEIF, it was a no-brainer. I'm very excited to announce that Never Summer Industries will be building the decks for the new line of LEIF...

Every LEIF will now have unlimited range since the main battery pack can be swapped with a freshly-recharged pack to get you through a long commute or keep you shredding all afternoon. Beyond adding range to your ride, extra packs will also reduce electronic waste since you won't need to buy a new board every time the battery cycles end. 8,000 Miles of Shredding in Each Battery Pack The charging time for the removable batteries will be 60-90 minutes and provide the same 8 mile range for 1,000 cycles. This gives each battery pack a lifetime of 8,000 miles before needing to be replaced.    ...

The Safest Braking in Rideables The LEIF will now feature 2 ways to brake: electrically or mechanically. These braking systems can be used separately, or simultaneously to provide the most powerful stopping power of any electric rideable.     Regenerative braking: Electric Brakes The electronic braking will work just like a traditional electric skateboard - which works by sending a signal to run the motor backwards. This process also regenerates the battery as you brake. Just pull backwards on the thumb slider, and the motors will begin to slow down . The further you pull backwards on the thumb slider, the harder you will brake. The electric brakes...

Every LEIF model will feature traction control that will control the motors dynamically to ensure a stable and confident ride. This will make learning and riding the LEIF much faster and easier for everyone. Riding with traction control The difference between riding the LEIF with and without traction control really feels like going from a stripped-down racing kart to a porsche. If you are a professional driver, then you can handle a racing kart - but the average driver loses control at high speeds since they lack traction control. A brand new Porsche drives great for everyone and makes the average driver feel like they're...

Over the next few days we will be announcing some innovative new features that will be on every pre-order and first generation LEIF eSnowboard. Today's feature will add a level of personalization with each LEIF eSnowboard, and have a more unified color scheme: Accent Color Choices in Orange, Blue & Green We asked you what colors should be on the final board and the top responses were blue, green and orange. The electronics will feature a sleek charcoal finish that will go with any color combination on the outside wheels. More colors will be available in the future, but we'll be launching with options for...
